Nephrology Transplant Research Opportunity for IMGs

Biomarkers of Chronic Kidney Transplant Injury

My laboratory and clinical research have focused on immune and non-immune mediated mechanisms of graft injury. The long-term goal of this work is to identify novel targets for biomarkers and therapeutic intervention, particularly of late injury. We have extensive experience in this arena, including the use of small animal models of late graft injury with a focus on the immunological determinants as well as role of calcineurin inhibitors (CNI), ubiquitously used immunosuppressants that mediate long-term graft injury. This expertise is coupled with extensive molecular analyses of human tissues using low density mRNA arrays. We also have expertise in large transplant recipient cohorts (4,000+) that have graft demise examining clinical, immunological, and genetic parameters (DeKAF; Genomics of Kidney Transplantation) and have participated substantively with the Banff working group to develop standard definitions for the pathology of late allograft failure in the kidney. As Director of Research for the Comprehensive Transplant Institute, we maintain a robust clinical research group with both NIH and industry sponsored studies, maintaining a biospecimen bank for the UAB kidney transplant program.
